Hamilton Family Doulas
Sneaking in time to meditate can be hard when you Sneaking in time to meditate can be hard when you have a baby who wants to be in your arms all the time.

Consider taking the time to meditate the next time you little one is quiet, cuddly and drowsy.

Sit, or stand, in a comfortable place, hold your baby comfortably and close your eyes. Focus in drawing your breath slowly in through your nose. Breathe the air down deep into your belly and feel it, and the baby in your arms, rise a little as your belly expands. The let the air out through your nose or your mouth. Feel your belly, and your baby gentle bob downwards. Just let the breath out, don't worry about controlling it.

Repeat this 5 or 6 more times. With each exhale, feel your shoulders and your back, your chest and your neck, your arms and your thighs relax. Let the tension go a little more each time. Listen to the sound of the breath inside your head.

Continue breathing comfortably. Each time a thought comes into your head let it float in and then shift your focus back to the sound of your breath. Enjoy the simple pleasure of just existing.

Life is a lot right now. Carving out small moments of simplicity and mindfulness can help you reduce stress in the rest of your life.

If you worry about taking enough time for your meditation, or spending more time that you have in mediation, you can set a timer on your phone. Be careful to set the alarm tone to a quiet bell or chime so you're not startled when it goes off. Start with 5 or 10 minutes and work up to 15 or 20 minutes.

Try it once a day or set aside some time in the morning and in the afternoon. In the next few weeks, you'll start to notice less stress and more patience in your life. What a gift to give yourself!

SELF CARE TIP! If you're feeling overwhelmed and SELF CARE TIP! If you're feeling overwhelmed and disconnected - and seriously, who isn't these days - you can reduce the stress you're feeling and increase your feelings of connectedness by taking a minute to just hug your partner.

It's such a simple thing, but it can have really profound effects!

Oxytocin is a hormone and important neurotransmitter. It can reduce stress, stabilize our moods, increase our sense of well-ing, helps us feel bonded to our partner, promotes relaxation and trust.

Take a moment every day to just hold your partner in your arms, or be held by them. Stay connected in a hug for 30 seconds or more. Just breathe and feel your tension ebb away.
Was this year your baby's first time seeing and to Was this year your baby's first time seeing and touching snow? What was their reaction?

I remember my littlest one laughing manically while running around screaming and throwing snow everywhere. It was hilarious. And annoying, when he kept throwing snow all over the sidewalk I was trying to shovel.

Some kids hate snow, tho. Or feel betrayed when they realise it's cold.

What was your little one's reaction?
Have you started panicking yet about what you're g Have you started panicking yet about what you're going to do about your other kids when you go into labour? You could ask a neighbour, but maybe you don't know any. You could ask your family, but the nearest parent or sibling is a couple hours away, and they have to work, besides. And, who feels comfortable calling a friend across town in the middle of the night?

What is 1 piece of advice you'd give to a brand ne What is 1 piece of advice you'd give to a brand new breastfeeding/chestfeeding parent?

How do you know when it's not going well? How do you know when it's not going well?

Because it seems like it would be totally normal to feel like a failure as a new mother. It seems like it would be totally normal to cry more, to get angry easily, to forget to eat, to not care about what you look like...

I mean, you have a tiny baby. You might even have a tiny baby AND a couple of other little people who need your attention night and day!

You're busier than you ever imagined being. And when you aren't busy you are tethered to your baby while you feed them, console them, nourish them, clean them, entertain them...

It's easy to imagine all of your feelings are supposed to be there. And, tho they are normal in the sense that they often happen to parents with tiny children, if those kinds of feelings - overwhelm, hopelessness, frustration, desperation, sadness, regret - are filling your heart and mind most of the time or even half of your time, there is help.

You deserve joy. You deserve laughter. You deserve wonder and awe and excitement.

Check out our show Birth & Baby Talk this week if you are about to become a parent or a new parent. This stuff is important to address and we'll help you recognize when you need help.
