Only A Doula’s Son

Sep 17, 2015

Well, we do tell them they can do anything!

Son: “Should I make a cafe?”

Doula: “That might be an awesome thing to do when you are an adult!”

Son: “I will make a cafe and be a doula and maybe I’ll be a video game creator, too.”

Did you know that in Ontario approximately 40% of Did you know that in Ontario approximately 40% of pregnant folks who have had a previous c-section attempt a VBAC. Of those approximately 70% are successful.

The numbers vary based on your region, and they are a little lower across the country and in the US. But, they are very encouraging!

Things that contribute to that success rate:
1: an interval of at least 18 months after your previous birth by caesarean;
2: a previous surgery that feature a transverse incision and not a vertical incision or vertical plus transverse incision;
3: the reason for the primary c-section was not because of factors such as a cervix that never opened up;
4: labour in a hospital that offers immediate access to caesarean;
5: use continuous electronic fetal monitoring.

There are definitely other factors to consider, but these are the big ones.

The bottom line is: the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada recommends a trial of labour for pregnant people who pass the first three recommendations for success.

Love Letters To Doulas This lovely client c Love Letters To Doulas

This lovely client came to us 2 months prior to their due date. They shared that they had a first birth experience that ended with a c-section. The birth left my client overwhelmed, upset and traumatized.

For their next birth they wanted to have a completely different experience. They chose a different health care provider, a different birthing place and a doula who was experienced in VBAC support. They paid more attention to what their body was doing in the months leading up to birth and saw a chiropractor, a pelvic floor therapist and an acupuncturist.

Using our @bodyreadymethod training, we assessed this client's movement patterns, posture and body alignment. We also reviewed our client's previous birth with them to better understand why the birth unfolded in the way it did and if we could use that knowledge to improve this next birth. We provided some specific tools, in a step-by-step plan, that focused on key areas with the goal of bringing the body into greater balance and pave the way for a smoother birth.

When our client went into labour, the work done in pregnancy, coupled with the insight and support we were able to provide in during labour resulted in a supported birth experience that was so different from their first one. Not only were they able to achieve the VBAC they dreamed about, they described the experience as "redemptive".

Being a part of that experience is exactly why we do this work.

If you are dreaming about a VBAC, had a difficult first birth or just want to help yourself have a great first birth, we'd love to help you make that dream a reality.
