Learning That I Am Enough

Learning That I Am Enough

by Leanne Palmerston | Oct 26, 2015 | Blog

I recently attended a conference put on by my new certification organization ProDoula. It was an amazing few days of speakers and breakout sessions, people who loved and supported each other. Every person was there to help ensure that we all had the tools we needed to...

Journalling can be a hugely effective mental welln Journalling can be a hugely effective mental wellness practice.

We spend soooooo much time on social media. And it can be fun, but it also creates a lot of noise in our heads. And too much noise and not enough solitude is NOT good for a person. If you are struggling with mental wellness - and truly, we all kind of are this year - all that noise can prevent us from finding the peace required to process our thoughts and feelings.

That's where journalling is such a wonderful practice. You can get all of your feelings out on paper where they might not feel so big or scary, and where you'll have an easier time thinking through how to manage them. Maybe you'll create a plan for yourself.

Or maybe it will be like tucking them safely away, out of your head for a while.

Or maybe, you'll just enjoy the quiet and the ritual of sitting with pen in hand, blank page full of possibilities.

To help create a habit out of writing for yourself, pick a time of day when you can sit and write for 5 minutes (or 20, you get to decide). Choose a time like first thing in the morning when you're enjoying your morning cuppa or midday when you stop to nourish your body or before bed when you could really benefit from clearing your mind. Have yours supplies waiting for you. Then commit to doing this every morning for the next week.

We promise you'll feel better - it may not solve all your problems, but you'll have a sense of accomplishment and feel more creative. And those are some really good feelings to carry around with you.
You're pregnant, so of course you're supposed to b You're pregnant, so of course you're supposed to be happy all the time, right? WRONG!

Some pregnant folks experience depression and anxiety for the first time while pregnant. Megan from @familydoulasofottawa is on this week's Birth & Baby Talk speaking about mood disorders in pregnancy.

It's FRIDAY NIGHT! This is traditionally a movies It's FRIDAY NIGHT! This is traditionally a movies and snack night around our place.

On the television tonight: we're going to rent Promising Young Woman.

On the snack rack: clementines and popcorn with a shamefully large amount of melted butter.

What is on your watch list and snack menu this evening?
I have found the most amazing nighttime sleepy tea I have found the most amazing nighttime sleepy tea and boy oh boy does it ever work well!

First, let me tell you that I have had a problem with insomnia for a couple of decades that only got worse when I became a doula - all those long nights at births and night nanny sessions - and then hit menopause. I have gotten a new mattress, new pjs, made the room cool, but the blankets heavy, I've meditated and listened to podcasts and audiobooks, I've used breathing exercises, and I've taken melatonin. Trust me when I say I've tried everything and none of it worked. I also tried sleepy teas but I hate the smell of chamomile and the taste of valerian root.

And then, yesterday I got a lovely gift of tea from @DavidsTea from my husband. He knows I live for tea. There was a new to me tea called Lemon Lullaby. It looked promising.

I made it last night and thought, if nothing else, it'll be a nice, soothing and warm cuppa to send me off to sleep. First thought: it was delicious! Second thought: whoa, I'm feeling pretty drowsy!

So, if you are having a tough time settling yourself at night and falling asleep, if you have been trying everything to relieve your insomnia, give @DavidsTea Lemon Lullaby a try.

Let us know how it worked for you if you do try it!
There is a lot of information out in the world. A There is a lot of information out in the world. A simple search on Google can give you millions of options. There are books and documentaries, blog posts and news articles, advice from friends and influencers... It's incredibly hard to sift through it all. And a lot of the time, the information available from studies gets analysed through a particular person's belief system, simplified for ease of sharing and then misapplied and miscommunicated tens of thousands of times before it makes it to you.

Leanne from @hamilton_family_doulas will be having a look at one of those things tomorrow on @birth_and_baby_talk: formula use leads to obesity. She'll break down the belief and find out where it comes from and if it holds up to scrutiny.

If nothing else, you deserve to make choices for yourself and your family that are based on unbiased and accurate information. Because life's hard enough as it is!

What have you been reading lately? When yo What have you been reading lately?

When you choose books, do you like to learn things or are you looking for escape?

I'll be honest; while I'll try to read something that will improve my mindset or skills for work, I often find that I can't stay focused. I much prefer escapist reading.

I've been on a very specific kick. I tend to love anything set in the British Regency or Victorian eras. And, I love crime novels that feature female law enforcement. So colour me delighted to discover there are period crime novels with female detectives!

Tell me all about your specific reading vibe!

Two books series I'm in the middle of: The Lady Sherlock novels by Sherry Thomas - a smart woman pretends to be her (fake) detective brother's go-between but solves the crimes herself - and the Kendra Donavon novels by Julie McElwain - rogue FBI agent gets goes back in time by accident and solves crimes.
